Brian's Take On Metallica @ Wachovia 1/17

It was in the 20s in the parking lot of the Wachovia Center in Philly on Saturday. Bundled up in three shirts, three jackets, two layers of pants, two pairs of socks, mittens, and a hat, I jumped out of the car and braced myself for what would become one of best times of my life. This was my first time seeing Metallica. Metallica! The greatest metal band in the world! Full of adrenaline, I stepped into the cold parking lot at 3:00pm, cracked a beer, and got down to business.

Armed with five hours of Metallica mixed across four CDs, Me, Shane, Garrett, and our buddy Bolen were ready to party. The night before we stocked up on food and beer, and after a quick stop at our local WaWa that afternoon for smokes and last minute supplies, we put in the first CD, turned it up, and hit the road. A little over an hour later we pulled into the Wachovia Center parking lot, just as the first Metallica mix ended. It wasn't crowded yet so we found a nice spot a few rows of cars away from the portable toilets and pulled in. When you're going to be drinking for 4 hours before a concert you want to be close to the bathroom.

As soon as I opened the door of Shane's Explorer I was struck by only one thought...it's fucking cold! I immediately put on all of the extra layers of clothes I had brought with me, and then went straight to the beer. For the next few hours we hung out downing Bud Lights, talking about all things Metallica, trying to predict what songs we would hear, and rocking out to more of the mix CDs we brought. Every hour or so we would jump back in the car and crank the heat to warm up a little, and after a few of these trips we started getting hungry and busted out the propane grill we had.

Drunk and hungry, we all couldn't wait to cook up a small feast, too bad mice got into the grill at Shane & Garrett's house and Garrett forgot to check it the night before so it was covered in shit. Luckily he brought a charcoal grill as a spare...with no charcoal or lighter fluid. Garrett is officially the worst tailgater I know.

Some nice guys from the parking lot let us borrow everything we needed to get the grill going and we eventually got to eat. Now sufficiently full and liquored up, I roamed the parking lot for a half an hour handing out our promo CDs to other tailgating fans. Before I knew it it was time to head into the show, so we pocketed two beers each for the wait in the line and headed towards the arena.

The Sword was playing when we got to our seats. They were ok. Machine Head was next, they rocked pretty hard and played "Hallowed Be Thy Name," an awesome Iron Maiden cover that they also recorded for the tribute album Kerrang! did for Iron Maiden - Maiden Heaven. We had a great view of their drummer, and he was absolutely nuts, but as soon as they left the stage I knew this was just a warm-up and the real deal was coming next.

I got chills when the lights went down and Ecstasy Of Gold started, then came the heart beat that kicks off "That Was Just Your Life" and Metallica took off flying. I don't really remember seeing much of that song or the next one, "The End Of The Line," because my head was busy swinging up and down as fast as possible. My neck is still a little sore three days later.

I was hoping the next song would give my brain a break from the constant rattling, but as soon as I heard the intro to "Creeping Death" I lost it. It's one of my favorite Metallica songs of all time, and they haven't been playing it that much this tour, so I obviously went ape shit. It was only the third song of the set and I already lost my voice chanting "die" during the breakdown.

Metallica kept rocking with some more old songs, a few new songs, and then after two off of the Black Album they launched into "All Nightmare Long," and I remember looking over at Garrett and we both had expressions of "Holy shit!" written all over our face. We had listened to a few early shows from the tour that Garrett downloaded and they never played it, so it caught us completely by surprise. We were talking before the show about how much we wanted to hear it and how upsetting it was that they weren't playing it this tour, none of us were keeping track of their shows so no one noticed that about half-way through the tour they added it to the set list. A very pleasant surprise.

We got the staples "Nothing Else Matters," "Master Of Puppets," and "Enter Sandman" during the second half of the show. The band walked off after "Sandman," and we all waited anxiously for their encore. The band took the stage again after a few minutes and launched into "Last Caress," which is one of our favorite covers from Garage Inc, and fun as hell to sing along to. They ended the show with two songs from Kill 'Em All, "Whiplash" and "Seek And Destroy." However before the band closed the night with "Seek" James brought his daughter Marcella out onto the stage because it was her birthday. He talked about her having a Dad who is on the road a lot and not always around for her birthday, so it's nice to have her come see Dad at work, and then had us all sing her "Happy Birthday." It was a genuinely heartfelt moment, and something I'm glad I was there for.

Towards the end of "Seek And Destroy" Garrett and I headed up to the front row so we could try to grab the picks and other goodies the band throws from the stage at the end of the show. We had a present for them too. We snuck one copy of our promo into the show and planned to throw it up on stage at the end. We waited for the right time, and while Rob was looking right at us I wound up and tossed our demo like a frisbee right at him. Rob put out his hand, I'm not sure if he tried to catch it or was just protecting himself because he thought it was going to hit him, but either way it was a foot away from his grasp before it missed and fell to the stage. As the band walked around giving out their souvenirs they were walking right over it. I was screaming as loud as I could but no one heard me and all four of the horsemen walked off stage while our CD still laid there.

Except for our failure to get Metallica to pick up our demo, this was the perfect show. Garrett had a short list of songs he wanted to hear at least once during the three shows he is seeing, and they played them ALL AT THIS SHOW! It was awesome, we got to rock out, and Metallica is the best metal band ever. Period.

If you want to see the full set list from our show it's here, and if you want you can download the full show for $10 too.

Divergence T-Shirts

The first batch of Divergence Tee's has been ordered! We haven't decided on a price yet, but we promise they will be cheap. Definitely under $20, probably more like $10. We'll have to wait for about two weeks for them to be delivered, but we will definitely have them for the next show we play, which is being planned now and is probably going to be in mid-to-late February. We're trying to get a few back-to-back shows in different regions, we'll let you know when we have something more concrete.

We're going to try to set up a way for you to buy shirts from us online. There are a number of different options that we've found, but we need to see who provides the best service and takes the smallest percentage from the transaction. There are also some "print-on-demand" sites we might consider using. They don't stock any shirts, instead they wait for an online order to come in and when it does they print the shirt for that order and then ship it. The problem is we just give them a graphic and they go and do everything else, so we will have to order a few to check the quality before we let them start manufacturing our stuff. We will make sure to keep you updated.

Why We Love ReverbNation (part 2)

Here are the reasons we love ReverbNation #6-10. #1-5 are here

6. Revenue Sharing

If you sign up for their "Fair Share" program, ReverbNation shares 50% of the ad revenue they make from your pages with you. All you have to do is give them a PayPal account and they will add half of all the money they make from ads on your page into your account. Once you have a balance of $20 you can make a withdrawal and they'll put that money into your PayPal. It really is that simple.

7. Gig Finder

Another cool service on ReverbNation is called "Gig Finder," and it helps you find new venues to play. You can search for them by location, age of admittance, and the coolest of all by similar bands. Lets say you find another band on ReverbNation that you think would fit great on the bill with you, well then just type their name into the "Gig Finder" and ReverbNation automatically finds venues that they have played and other bands similar to them have played. It's a super easy and very effective way to find new gigs.

8. Recommendations

ReverbNation allows bands to recommend other artists, and these recommendations appear on the right side of their profile. Since these recommendations are coming from musicians whose fans (hopefully) trust their tastes and opinions, it helps validate you with their fan base and should drive a bunch of traffic your way.

9. Digital Distribution

Want to put your music on iTunes? ReverbNation makes it easy with their Digital Distribution service. It's the only service we mentioned that actually costs money, it's about $35 per release, but they will put your stuff on iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Napster, and a bunch of other sites for you. Honestly, we're going to try heading a different route in this area, but it's another example of how ReverbNation really is a one-stop site to handle all of a band's online needs. And even if you do use another digital distributor to put your songs on iTunes, you can use ReverbNation's "Store Links" feature to give people the option to purchase your songs off of your ReverbNation page.

10. It's Not Just For Bands

ReverbNation allows all different kinds of people involved in the music industry to make profiles, including band managers, music venues, record labels and fans. The site makes it easy for all of these groups interact with each other, connect, and collaborate. And if you ask us, the entire music industry is better for it.

In addition to providing all of these great services, ReverbNation also has absolutely fantastic customer support. You send an e-mail to them with a problem and you usually get a reply within thirty minutes. When had a problem with our MySpace it took weeks to get anything resolved. Not only do does ReverbNation provide awesome tools for bands to use online, but they do it with reliable support to back you up if something goes wrong, and that's why we love ReverbNation.

Why We Love ReverbNation (part 1)

Warning: This post is on the long side, and split into two parts.

I'd be willing to bet that most people who see us linking to our ReverbNation page have no idea what the hell it is or why they should bother going there. As far as social networking sites go, MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube are obviously the most popular, and as you move down The Long Tail of social networks the rest are less well known to the general public. However, even though we've only had our page for a few months, ReverbNation has already done a ton for us, so we decided it's time to explain some of the reasons why ReverbNation is awesome and why you should really think about checking it out.

ReverbNation is a social networking site for people interested in music. Most people are probably saying "Isn't MySpace based on music too and like, 1000 times the size of ReverbNation?" True, MySpace is heavily involved in music, but it doesn't even come close to providing the kinds of services and opportunities for bands that ReverbNation does. MySpace does the basics, you can host a blog, post videos and pictures, put music on your page, and interact with people by adding them to your friends and messaging them. That's about it. ReverbNation does all of that, does most of it better than MySpace, and then does a shit load more on top of that.

Here's our list of the top ten reasons we love ReverbNation:

1. The Mailing List

ReverbNation's mailing list service, "Fan Reach," is incredible. You can sort your contacts by numerous categories, including gender, the date they joined your list, and most importantly geography. Let's say your band went and played a show in Virginia and it went over pretty well. You got a bunch of people to sign up for your mailing list and then the word spread and a few more people checked you out online and joined the mailing list that way. Now your band has a small following in Virginia, so any time you play there again you're going to want to let those people know about it. "Fan Reach" makes it easy to sort your contacts by location, just type in the zip code of the venue you're playing and then select a distance, say 50 miles, and any of your fans within 50 miles of the venue will get the e-mail about your show.

Being able to target your messages is really important because it makes the interactions you have with your fans feel more personal. It's much better than mass-messaging everyone on your mailing list just to say your playing a show in a certain area. It shows that you actually took the time to write down where each of your fans is located and care enough about them to make sure they're only getting the news that matters to them and not blindly shooting off message to your whole mailing list that only a select few will care about.

2. Widgets & Banners

ReverbNation automatically makes widgets and banners that you can add to your other web pages. If you look to the right of our blog you can see we have a music player widget, a mailing list sign-up widget they call a "Fan Collector," and we have a banner all the way at the bottom the page as well. The "Fan Collector" widget is actually another reason to have ReverbNation host your mailing list too, not only can you add e-mail addresses manually, but with these widgets you can turn any website you have into a mailing list recruitment location.

They also make it really easy for people to take your music and spread it across the web. If you look at the music player, there is a big "SHARE" button on it, and they also provide HTML so that you can link text to sign our mailing list, or get a music player widget.

3. Fan Exclusives

One of the keys to a successful marketing and promotional campaign is getting people involved and then rewarding them for their contribution. ReverbNation allows you to make certain songs available only to those people who sign your mailing list or become your fan on ReverbNation (which requires a ReverbNation profile). This allows you to create an incentive for people to give you their contact information and become a part of your fan base. In exchange for some free music you now have another person that you can reach on a regular basis. In a time where there are so many options for music out there it's very easy to be forgotten, so just being able to remind people about your band's existance is more valuable than you might think.

4. Blog Importing

If you're like us, you host your blog on a blogging site because it's designed to provide better services to bloggers than social networking sites do. However it becomes a real pain in the ass if you want your blog to show up on all of your profiles, because then you have to copy and paste everything again and again into each page. Not anymore, ReverbNation lets you link to an existing blog (so does Facebook, MySpace is the only profile where we have to manually go in and re-paste our blog entry...BOO MySpace).

All you have to do to make ReverbNation mirror your existing blog is type in the URL of your blog's RSS feed, then ReverbNation will automatically pick up your new posts and enter them into the blog in your profile on their site. Go check it out, I haven't typed a single thing into our blog on ReverbNation, but it still has all of these entries.

5. Stat Tracking & Charts

ReverbNation tracks a ton of stats for you, I would try to name them all but the list would get long fast. The point is that it gives you a very good picture of where you're making waves online, so you can tell which promotional strategies are working, which ones aren't, and then make adjustments accordingly. They also automatically rank you based on these stats among other bands in your genre, using what they call a "Band Equity Score." They say it's a measurement of your influence online, and it weighs in all of the stats they track for you to figure out how popular and influential your internet presence is.

Check back tomorrow for #6-10!
